Passivation of stainless steel is a process of cleaning and then forming a corrosion resistant oxide layer on the surface of a stainless steel part. This is done through immersion in an acidic solution which removes any “free iron” or carbon on the surface of the part and allows the oxide layer to form. This treatment can be used on a wide variety of stainless alloys and in some cases greatly improves or eliminates any corrosion problems.
Processing can occur either through bulk processing or racking and any stainless alloy can be passivated 300 series, 416 series and many others.
